Vinyl is the usual replacement frame because it is lower maintenance and, in national guides, lower priced. The winter test is the U-factor on the label, not the material name.

Vinyl, a rigid PVC frame, is the window most replacement quotes in this region start with. It does not need paint, the corners on a decent unit are welded, and the installed price is usually lower than fiberglass or wood. That is a tendency in national cost guides, not a promise about the bid you will receive.

Fixr's vinyl installation guide, updated January 21, 2026, publishes an installed range of about $350 to $800 per window, with an average of about $575. HomeAdvisor and Angi publish vinyl figures around $100 to $900 that read as the window category, not necessarily the same installed scope. Use the cost page before you treat any of those numbers as a budget for your house.

Cold weather, without the brochure language

Spokane is in the heating climates covered by Washington's Climate Zone 5 window table. A vinyl frame can meet the residential energy code. The proof is the NFRC label: for vertical windows, the code maximum U-factor on that table is 0.30. Glass-only marketing numbers are smaller than the whole-unit U-factor and are the wrong figure to compare.

Vinyl moves more as temperatures swing than a fiberglass frame does. For a standard double-hung that is rarely a reason to reject it. For a very large opening, or a dark exterior color on a south or west wall, ask the manufacturer whether that line is rated for the size and color. Do not paint ordinary vinyl. Paint rarely stays put, and the frame was not built for it.

The frame behind the new frame

An insert vinyl window only works if the old frame is square and dry. Probe the sill. Soft wood, peeling paint at the corners, or staining under the apron means the old frame should be part of the quote, which is a full-frame replacement. Leaving a rotten frame in the wall to save the trim is how drafts come back.

Fog between two panes means the insulated glass seal has failed. If the frame is sound, the quote may be a new insert or a new glass unit in the existing sash. If the frame is soft, replace the frame too. We do not make that call from a form. Describe what you see and let the contractors look.

Questions about vinyl

Are vinyl windows a reasonable choice for Spokane winters?

They can be. The check is the NFRC label on the whole unit, not the word vinyl. Washington's residential energy code sets a maximum U-factor of 0.30 for vertical windows in Climate Zone 5, which includes Spokane. Ask the contractor which code edition the permit uses and for the U-factor on the quoted unit.

What should I ask before choosing vinyl?

Ask whether the old frame is solid enough to stay, whether the unit is an insert or a full-frame window, and how the quoted U-factor compares with 0.30. Vinyl is usually the lower-maintenance, lower-priced frame. It is a poor place to hide a rotten sill, and very large openings may need a stiffer frame material.
